Luffa Progress

loofa

My luffa vines have been growing well since I last showed them in late May.

We bought a trellis arch for them to climb on to utilize vertical space without shading our garden plots. They grew up on to it by late June.

I literally think the vines were growing three inches a day for about a month. Once they hit this point in early July, the vines began growing off-shoots. And I think I just spotted my first flower on the vine!

The vines do take a lot of water–I’d read about that–they look a bit wilty in this picture (and the rest of my yard looks dead) but they always perk up well after watering.

My mom recently snuck a picture in a shop for me of some cute novelty luffa sponges. I think there’s a lot of potential in that idea.

I hope my vines are very productive this fall.

  1. Glad to see your luffa is doing well! Can’t wait to see it continue it growth! Ours didn’t fair so well. Ah well, there’s always next year!

  2. I’m excited to see how it does for you. I had planned to grow luffa this year but didn’t really get around to it, so I’m looking very much forward to getting it going next year! πŸ™‚

I have been interested in growing Luffa for a few years now . I moved from the Oregon Coast to the upper part of Michigan . I think the growing season is warmer & longer then Or. My garden is plentiful . Can you tell me where I might buy the seeds ?
